We can trace its history right back to the invention of the television itself and, in its crudest form, it was used by NASA during its first manned space flights. Not surprisingly, the early technique was not without its pitfalls. It was expensive, its applications were limited and picture quality was poor. It’s a very different picture today. Advanced technology now allows any number of sites and individuals to interact in a conference situation via two-way video and audio transmission, just at the press of a couple of buttons. Over recent years, the enormous improvement in quality of images and detail, combined with a dramatic drop in prices, means that video conferencing is now widely accessible and is becoming increasingly popular. So why choose video conferencing? More and more, businesses rely on speed and efficiency. There isn’t time to waste in making endless phone calls and sending faxes and emails. Decisions need to be made quick-smart, with all involved parties able to participate, together. Video conferencing allows you to do exactly this. It’s a life-like experience, just like ‘being there’. Admittedly, although it’s now far more affordable, it’s still not cheap. But if you’re in business, just compare that with the expense of sending people here, there and everywhere to attend meetings. Above all, there are the travel costs to consider, let alone those associated with accommodation and the obligatory night or two out on the beer.
